overpack and salvage drum

Salvage Drum & Overpack

A salvage drum is much more than your average drum or overpack. In particular, it is designed specifically to prevent spills of hazardous materials during transport. As a result, it plays a critical role in maintaining safety and compliance. Furthermore, a salvage drum must undergo rigorous testing to ensure reliability under extreme conditions. To meet regulatory standards, it must comply with UN Ratings administered by the DOT. Ultimately, these requirements ensure that hazardous materials are transported safely and securely.

Qualified to self-certify by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), ENPAC tests salvage drums to meet the following DOT standards:

Leakproofness Test (DOT 49 CFR 178.604) –  Drums filled with compressed air must pass a specified pressure test for a minimum of five minutes with no leaks.

Stack Test (DOT 49 CFR 178.606) –  Stack the unit 3 meters high with the rated load and maintain it for 24 hours.

Drop Test (DOT 49 CFR 178.603) –  Drop the drums from a height determined by the packing group and ensure they do not crack or sustain damage.

Vibration Test (DOT 49 CFR 178.608) –  Subject the packaging to vibrations at a specified frequency for 60 minutes and confirm it does not rupture or leak.  They require this test only for new designs or substantial modifications.

Once certification is complete, you must label each drum with the term SALVAGE or SALVAGE DRUM and include the proper UN markings.

What is a Poly-Overpack®?

An overpack drum serves as a secondary containment that protects a container, usually a 55-gallon steel drum, holding non-hazardous materials. ENPAC offers sizes ranging from 20 gallons up to 600 gallons. These drums work best for storing all kinds of chemicals or small transformers. Keep in mind that if you plan to transport anything inside the overpack, you must use a salvage drum instead, as stated above.

Remember… All salvage drums are overpacks, but not all overpacks are salvage drums!
